Steel Folding Chairs

The workhorse of the category, and the one where the difference between a five-year chair and a fifteen-year chair is entirely invisible in a photograph.

It is the pivot. A cheap chair has a rivet punched straight through thin-wall tube; every fold works that hole slightly more oval, and after a few hundred cycles the chair racks sideways and no longer sits square on a floor. A shouldered pivot turning against a bearing washer does not do that, because the bearing surface is the washer rather than the tube itself.

The other number is the steel gauge — the wall thickness of the tube. It is what stops the frame taking a permanent set when somebody stands on the seat to reach a banner, which somebody always does. We put the gauge on the quote in writing, which is unusual and should not be.
