Resin & Plastic Folding Chairs

A blow-moulded resin chair is the right answer for anything that lives outside or gets hosed down. The shell does not rust, does not absorb water and can be wiped clean in seconds, which is why marquee hire and outdoor venues buy almost nothing else.

The specification that matters is UV stabilisation. An unstabilised polymer left in sunlight goes chalky, fades unevenly and eventually becomes brittle enough to crack at the seat-to-frame fixings. It is a package additive, it costs very little, and you cannot tell whether it is there by looking at a new chair.

So ask, and get the answer in writing. We use UV-stabilised resin as standard and we will say so on the quote, because two years into an outdoor fleet is a long time to find out you bought the other kind.

Why did our outdoor chairs go chalky?

The resin was not UV stabilised. Sunlight breaks down the polymer at the surface, which is the chalky bloom, and it keeps going until the shell is brittle enough to crack at the fixings. It is an additive in the material and it is invisible on a new chair, so it has to be asked for.

Are resin chairs less durable than steel?

Different failure modes. Resin will not rust and shrugs off water; steel will not go brittle in sunlight. For an outdoor or wet-area fleet, resin on a steel frame is the sensible combination and it is what we would recommend without being asked.
